The Dennis Emanuel Brown Bursary for Educational Achievement
RATIONALE: One of the objectives of the Dennis Emanuel Brown Trust is to help to alleviate poverty
through creating and enhancing educational opportunities. This can be achieved by awarding
bursaries to children between the ages of 10-12 years, who will be making the transition to
High/Comprehensive High Schools. The Central Branch All-age School is located within the
inner city environs of Kingston. The pupils of the Central Branch All-age School with
their need for educational empowerment and socioeconomic mobility are ideal candidates
for receiving a bursary of this nature.
THE SCHOOL: Central Branch All-age School is an urban school with a roll of approximately 800 pupils.
The surrounding community has a high level of unemployment, where the mothers are usually
the head of the household. There is definitely a role to be played by giving financial
assistance, in any form which will help to alleviate some of the socioeconomic problems
experienced by these pupils, who exist in these diverse conditions. The school despite its
environs, has been headed by eminent educators, and has produced prominent citizens,
including the late Dennis Emanuel Brown. The difficulties being experienced by many
families are jeopardizing the ability of the pupils, to fully take advantage of the
opportunities to gain a good education. It is within this context, that The Dennis Emanuel
Brown Trust takes great pleasure giving this/these awards.
THE BURSARY: This/these will be worth $15,000 dollars each, which will be awarded to a pupil/pupils
from grade six on a yearly basis. A committee from The
Central Branch All-age School will make the preliminary selection, based on the
relationship that the staff has/have with the pupil/pupils. The Student Assessment Unit
within the Ministry of Education along with the Dennis Emanuel Brown Trust will make the
final selection for the award.
The bursary is for the sole use of:
a) payment of tuition fees.
b) rental of text books.
The Trust will have the responsibility to maintain and disburse funds, to the Principal of the
Central Branch All-age School at yearly intervals, after the selection of the pupil/pupils has/have
been made. The Principal and the School will be responsible for the forwarding of payment/payments
to the institution in which the child has been accepted.
